I placed the CD into my CD-ROM drive, but the installation process did not start up automatically. Is there something wrong?
Probably not. The game's CD is setup to run the installation automatically upon insertion into the CD-ROM drive, but the ability for your PC to run programs on CD automatically is an option that may be turned off. If this is the case, just run the Setup.exe program that is on the CD. You can do this by using the Run entry of the Start button, browsing until you find the Setup.exe program on the CD, and clicking on OK. It would also be possible to use My Computer or Windows Explorer to navigate to the CD and then double-click on the Setup program.
I have Windows XP (or Windows VISTA) and I can't get the game to install on my PC. I keep getting an error message about service packs for Windows NT. What can I do?
See the answer below in the section of questions on Windows XP/VISTA/7.
My system configuration is not listed in the help file as one of the ones that this game has been tested on. Will it still work on my PC?
Without knowing the specifics of your configuration, it is impossible to give an absolute answer, but if you are using an IBM-compatible PC that runs Windows 95 or better (Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows ME, Windows XP, etc.), then the answer is probably "Yes." The list of tested machines is not an all inclusive list. It just shows a sample of the different types of configurations that have been tested.
Can I install the game in the folder of my choice?
Yes! The setup program that installs the game will ask you for the name of the folder (also called the directory) for installation of the game. You can use the default folder that is listed there, type in the full path of a different folder, or click on the Browse button to find the folder of your choice. You can even type in the name (including the full path) of a folder that doesn't exist, and the setup program will create it for you.
Do I really need to close all my other applications to run the installation?
While it is not absolutely necessary to do this, it is recommended. Since many Windows applications use the same system files, the game's installation process may need to load a file that is currently in use by another program. The setup program will attempt to handle this situation and ask you to restart when it has completed. It is still a good idea to have as few applications running as possible when installing any new application.
What is the "Backup" folder that was created as a sub-folder of the game's folder?
The "Backup" folder contains any files that the setup program determined were needed to be replaced during the installation process.
How can I be sure that there are no viruses on the installation CD?
At the time that the master CD was created for the game, it was scanned using the latest technology and the most current virus definition files available.
If I choose not to register during the installation process, can I register at a later time?
Absolutely! The same registration window is available from the game's main window under the Help menu.
I have Windows XP (or VISTA/7) and I can't get the game to install on my PC. I keep getting an error message about service packs for Windows NT. What can I do?
You must have one of the original first pressed copies of the game (V1.0). The pressings since then of the game (V1.001), which comes in the newer DVD-style case, has this problem fixed. But, even if you have the original, the solution is easy.
The Windows XP and VISTA/7 operating systems are based on the older Windows NT operating system. This fools our installation program into thinking this is a newer version of Windows NT and that it needs service packs installed. That is NOT the case. To get our program to install on your PC, you only need to use the Windows XP/VISTA/7 built-in Compatibility Mode. It's real easy, and Vista itself even gives the option of installing the alternate way after the first try doesn't work. This is what you do for XP or VISTA/7 if it doesn't do it automatically:
Click on Start
Select My Computer
Right-click on the icon representing the CD drive containing the DoYouKnowWhoIAm? CD
Select Explore (or Open)
Right click on SETUP.EXE
Select Properties
Click on the Compatibility tab
Select the option for "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 95" then click OK
Double-click on SETUP.EXE to install
I have Windows XP. When I run the game, it cancels right after I click on the Start Game button. It displays some serious looking error message that talks about a Windows error. What should I do?
This is a known incompatibility between the first pressed copies of the game (the ones that came in the old style jewel case, V1.0)) and Windows XP. To solve this problem, just download and apply the Do You Know Who I Am? Service Release 1. You can download the SR1 file by clicking here. Once you've downloaded the file, you'll need to unzip the file and run the program that is unzipped. To unzip the download, navigate to it using My Computer and then double-click on it.
The Do You Know Who I Am? SR1 fixes the known incompatibility between the original version of our game (V1.0) and a newer version of one of the Windows XP system files. It is the only change incorporated into SR1. This service release is not necessary for running the game on other Windows operating systems. It also is not necessary for the newer copies of the game that come in the DVD-style case (V1.001).
I'm using Vista and when I click on the Help button in the game all I get is a warning message about the Help not being supported? - Click here to view Help System Online
Microsoft no longer supports the standard Windows Help System that has been in place for every version of Windows up through XP. Therefore, when you click on Help, you'll just get a warning message about the help system not being supported. That error message also comes with a link to a page at the Microsoft web site where you can download the system file needed to access the old Windows Help System. You can also get to that Microsoft page from this link.I'm using Vista and when I click on the Help button in the game I get an error message and the game just goes away? - Click here to view Help System Online
Microsoft no longer supports the standard Windows Help System that has been in place for every version of Windows up through XP. In the current version of this game (versions prior to V1.03), when you click on Help on the startup window or either edit window, you'll just get an error and then the game will close. This situation where the game will cancel has been fixed in the Service Release (SR1) that can be downloaded below. So, after installing the SR1, the program will no longer cancel in the situation where Help is selected. Still, in the upgraded version, when you click on Help, you'll get a warning message about the help system not being supported. That error message also comes with a link to a page at the Microsoft web site where you can download the system file needed to access the old Windows Help System. You can also get to that Microsoft page from this link.
I think I've played the game on this computer before, but my name is not listed as a returning player. Why not?
The game determines the list of returning players by analyzing the history of completed games. There are several possible reasons why your name might not be listed. First, if you've only played games that were saved to be restarted at a later time, then you wouldn't have any games stored in the history of completed games. Second, if you've ended a game early (before the point total was reached), have not saved it for restarting, and chose not to add it to the history file, then your name will not appear. Also, the game does some periodic database maintenance. If it determines that the database is getting too big and more than 600 games have been saved, it will attempt (with user approval) to purge some of the older games. In this case, if the games you played were in the purged records, your name wouldn't appear in the list of returning players.
My name is the same as one of the computer players, and every time I type in my name, the game thinks I'm a computer player. What should I do?
All you need to do is delete the "(computer)" at the end of the name. You can do this easily by just pressing the <Delete> key after typing in your name.
Why does it seem like some computer players are better than the others?
Some of the computer players are better than the others. Each computer player was created to do well on questions from their own time period. The further away the question gets from their era, the worse they'll do. Questions that address time periods long after their era will be especially challenging for them, but they'll still be able to get some of them correct.
Both Peter and Paul will guess aggressively and, because of their vast knowledge of scripture, will get a higher percentage of guesses correct than the other computer players. The apostle John will also get more questions correct than the other computer players, but he will not guess at questions as aggressively as Peter or Paul.
If I choose to have multiple computer players in a game with the same name, will they play exactly the same and try to get the same questions correct?
No. You can have the same computer name play for multiple players during a single game, but each will play as an individual. Each will have the same abilities but will not necessarily play the game in the same manner.
I wanted to look up one of the clues in the Bible, but when I looked up the reference listed, the information in the clue was not there. Why not?
Each biblical personality question comes with four clues. Each clue may be from a different spot in the Bible. The game only supplies one reference for that biblical character. That reference usually applies to the last clue. The purpose of the reference is to assist you in looking up information about the character in the Bible. Since the last clue is usually the most obvious, that is the reference that we supply for your biblical research. If you wish to find the biblical information about that personality from other sections of the Bible, we suggest looking up that character in a Bible Dictionary.
How do I access the Help System from within the game?
There are three ways to access the Help System. Two of them are from within the game. You can use the Help Topics item under the Help menu of the main window, or you can just press F1 from wherever you are. The Help Topics menu item will display the Help System's main table of contents. Pressing F1 will display the help topic that is most closely associated with where you are currently in the game. The third way is to use the shortcut icon for the help file that was created by the installation program.

I'm in the Question Editor and want to add a new question. Do I type in my question on top of the one showing and then click on the "Add" button or do I click on the "Add" button first?
You click on the "Add" button first. The editor is an interactive display of the question database. That is, you are actually accessing the question records in the database. If you type over an existing question, the database will think that you are trying to change that question. By clicking on the "Add" button first, you are creating a new blank question record to be used in the database.
I think I've really messed up the questions. I went to do some things, and I think I deleted some good questions and messed up some others. Can I get the original question file back?
The question file editor can be very dangerous because you are making "live" changes to the question database, but there are several ways to get the original questions back.
Every tenth time that the game is played, it performs some routine database maintenance. Before doing that maintenance, it creates a backup copy of the database. This file is named DYKWIAdb.BAK and is located in the folder where you installed the game. To use the backup database, rename the current main database (DYKWIA.mdb) to another name and then rename the backup database to the main database's name. That is, rename DYKWIAdb.BAK to DYKWIA.mdb. Caution: Doing this will set all of the game's information back to when the backup was created. Any recently saved games and game history may be lost.
A second option is to delete the game's database, DYKWIA.mdb, and reinstall the game. This will reinstall the original database. However, all history and saved games will be lost.
I get an error that points to a DLL file. I compared the version in my system folder with the list on this tech support web page and the one on my system is older. Is that a problem? How could that have happened? What do I do about it?
A version of a DLL that is older than the one supplied with this game can cause a problem.
The installation process for this game will only install a DLL if your PC doesn't have it or the version on your PC is older. If you have an older version on your PC, that means that some other application's installation has overwritten the one supplied with this game without comparing the version information. Ideally, this should not happen, but with the proliferation of freeware and shareware on the market, it is possible because a programmer may not have allowed for this when creating their installation processes.
The first thing to try is to reinstall this game. It should overwrite the older DLL. If you have successfully played this game and are worried about overwriting this game's database and losing your saved games and history, then relax. Once you have played this game on your computer, the database has been updated and will not be overwritten by the one in the installation process.
When I originally installed the game it created a shortcut with an icon that had only a couple of colors. Now, I've upgraded my monitor to High Color. Can I still get the fancier icon for my shortcuts?
Sure! To change to the game's main icon, access the "properties" of the shortcut for the game, select the "change icon" button, point the File Name to the DoYouKnowWhoIAm.exe file, and then choose an icon.
I've had to switch my PC to use an older monitor which doesn't handle a lot of colors. I now am running the game at 256 colors. It works fine, but my shortcuts show an icon which is all washed-out looking. Can I get an icon that looks better?
Yes. Just pop in the game's CD (cancel the setup if it starts automatically) and look for a file called DYKWIA16.ico. Move that icon file into the game's folder. Then, access the shortcut's "properties", click on the "change icon" button, and select the DYKWIA16.ico file as the icon.
Where can I go to get more help?
If after fully checking out the game's help system and this technical support web page you still need technical support, check out the additional tech support section of this page.
I'm having trouble with my PC. Can you recommend a place that I could get some general help?
The are a number of web sites that can provide good technical support for general PC troubles. The following two are free and contain a lot of valuable information: www.PCNineOneOne.com and www.Computing.net.
The system requirements necessary to run Do You Know Who I Am?™ are as follows:

Operating System | Windows 95 or higher | The program must be run in a 32-bit environment like Windows 95. It has been tested on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, and Windows XP. |
RAM Memory | n/a | No specific amount of RAM memory is required--just whatever would be required to run the version of Windows on the host computer. |
Hard Disk Space | 14meg/4meg | The maximum amount of hard disk space required for installation of the game is 14 meg. This amount required will vary depending on how many of the system control files have already been installed on the host computer by other applications. If a computer has all of the system files already installed, this game will use a minimum amount of 4 meg of hard disk space. |
CD-ROM Drive | Any Speed | A CD-ROM drive is required for installation of the game. Once the game has been installed, the CD-ROM will no longer be needed. All files necessary for running the game will be loaded onto the hard drive. |
Mouse | Recommended | A mouse or other pointing device is highly recommended for use with the game, but there still are enough short-cut key combinations to play the game without one. |
Sound Card | Recommended | The game will work just fine without a sound card to play the game's sounds, but the enjoyment of the game will be greatly enhanced by hearing the sounds. |
Colors | High Color Recommended | The game will operate at 256 color. It will even operate at 16 color (but look very washed-out). To obtain the maximum visual experience, it is recommended that your display be set at a color setting above 256 color. |
Alternate Icons: There are several alternate icons provided with Do You Know Who I Am?™. To change to a different icon, access the "properties" of the shortcut for the game, select the "change icon" button, point the File Name to the DoYouKnowWhoIAm.exe file, and then choose an icon.
This application was written in Microsoft® Visual Basic® version 5.0. Visual Basic programs require many supporting files in addition to the exe file that runs the program. Most of these files are loaded into the computer's Windows\System folder. If the file already exists on the computer and has a newer date and/or version number, then the setup process will bypass the installation of that file. (see below for a list of necessary files)
The database for all of the game’s information uses Microsoft® Access97® format. This database stores all the information about saved games, historical information, computer players, regular questions, and bonus questions. The database is stored in the game's main folder.
The game has been successfully tested on the following operating systems:
Pentium 150 MHz |
